Mediation in Planning - Supporting Localism

Date: 30/1/2011

Following the publication of the National Planning Forum /Planning Inspectorate commissioned report on "Mediation in Planning" in June work is progressing with the delivery of the recommendations which include continuing to pilot the use of mediation in planning as a means of resolving conflicts.

The Programme Board are now looking for volunteer LPAs to help with this ongoing piloting and a letter has been sent to your Chief Executive inviting interest.

You will also be aware of the invitation from CLG to become a Neighbourhood Planning Vanguard.  If you are intending to apply to become a Vanguard you may wish to consider the benefit of considering the use of mediation as one of the techniques you can offer to communities to help with neighbourhood Planning.

POS supports the work being undertaken by the Mediation in Planning Programme Board on which we are a represented and we hope that the ongoing piloting will help to address the questions which remain about the place of mediation in planning and how it might help in supporting localism.

Please contact Leonora Rozee ( or Kay Powell ( the Chair and Secretary of the mediation delivery programme respectively if you are interested or require more information.
