Open House For London Buildings

Date: 11/8/2004

Many of London’s finest and not so well known buildings will be open to the public on the weekend of September 18th & 19th.

London Open House (LOH) is a registered educational charity devoted to London, its architecture, its inhabitants and visitors. Founded in 1992 and functioning as a charity since 1997, Open House uses London as a living architectural exhibition with enormous opportunities for education and enjoyment. The annual weekend event allows 500-600 buildings to open up to public access across the capital

Ged Lawrenson, of the Planning Officers Society, stated “the Planning Officers Society (POS) is pleased to be associated with the annual event organised by LOH and I urge everyone with an interest in buildings to get to visit at least one over this weekend”.

Details of LOH and the weekend event can be found at http://www.londonopenhouse.org/

LOH programmes include:

  • Junior Open House - an event just for school children and their teachers;
  • Open Up - a schools project with contemporary buildings (with 2000 children in 2003);
  • projects in teacher training colleges;
  • projects that bring architects into schools; the production of teachers' resource materials;
  • regular weekend architectural tours;
  • a subscription Open House Bulletin on architectural events of interest to non-professionals; and
  • the 'Architecture Link' web site that promotes access to architecture from many directions, including the 'Meetings With Buildings' pages - a unique web resource for everyone interested in London's architecture.
