POS Supports Spatial Strategies Award

Date: 23/2/2005

As one of the principal sponsors of the Royal Town Planning Institute’s 2004 Planning Awards the Planning Officers Society was particularly pleased to sponsor the spatial planning award.

At the Awards ceremony held on 3rd February 2005 at the prestigious Royal Lancaster Hotel in London , Paul Watson, POS President, presented Eleanor Young, Planning Adviser to the Mayor of London, and Nicky Gavron, the Deputy Mayor of London , with the award for The London Plan. Paul commented that “The GLA can be proud of The London Plan. It shows that putting planning at the heart of governance, leading and co-ordinating policy and action across all sectors, delivers true regeneration and vital, vibrant and sustainable communities”.

Debbie McCullen, head of The London Plan team at the GLA said that “It was a real challenge to produce the strategy within the first mayoral term. It was also difficult to secure the scale of investment in public transport necessary to facilitate development”.

The independent panel of judges’ commentary on the choice of The London Plan as the winner included “The London Plan is a substantial piece of work that tackles priority issues and provides an essential input to planning at the local level. It was produced in a relatively short time and is genuinely strategic. This seminal piece of work richly deserves an award”.

The National Planning Framework for Scotland also receieved a Commendation in this Spatial Strategies category.
