Shift in government approach could prompt councils to encourage more private rented housing

Date: 22/9/2016

Planning magazine reports that early signals are that the new government's approach to boosting housing delivery could be substantially different from its predecessor's.

Nicky Linihan, the Planning Officers Society's housing delivery specialist, suggested to the magazine that the shift might prompt town halls to ask whether there was more they could do to encourage private rented housing schemes, for instance by looking at their viability policies and "whether they are flexible enough to allow this kind of initiative to come forward".

However, she stressed that it was important that local plan production was not held up by lengthy rewrites of policy.
