Local plans may be flexible enough to accommodate the impacts of a new or expanded runway in south east, suggests Kiely

Date: 8/5/2015

The Airports Commission's recommendations on aviation capacity in the south east are due out in the summer and any runway recommendations will have growth implications.

Mike Kiely, Chair of POS, told Planning magazine that any large increase in public transport provision has a significant impact on how planning is addressed in an area. Kiely added that local plans may be flexible enough to accommodate the impacts of a new or expanded runway.

"Unless there is a massive change to your area with very significant developments that you didn't predict, in most cases you may not have to do an awful lot to your plans," Kiely commented. "It depends on the type of plan you've got, how well it was written in the first place, and whether you foresaw this potential and made provision for it, and the nature of changes you're going to have to make in your particular area in response to that decision."
