Mike Kiely, Director of Planning & Building Control at Croydon LBC, has become the new President of the Planning Officers Society.  He was elected at the Society's Annual General Meeting held in Huntingdon on Friday 10th May 2013.

At the AGM Mike stated that "my aim for the year is to promote Great Planning, to illustrate that when we do a fantastic job the country benefits. I also want to encourage those planners in the public sector who are at an early stage of their career to be more active in POS and to this end we have set up a new group called POS Novus."

Mike joined Croydon in 2009, from Tower Hamlets where he had spent 3 years and before that he had worked for Waltham Forest. He is a chartered town planner with over 38 years' experience in local government. Currently leading the planning service in London's largest borough, Croydon, Mike was closely involved in the planning of the London 2012 Olympics, from its inception whilst at Waltham Forest, through to delivery at Tower Hamlets. Whilst at Tower Hamlets he also steered through numerous applications for major developments at Canary Wharf and the City Fringe.

Mike is a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Planning Officers Society (formerly the Senior Vice President, and Convenor for the London Region).  He is also a Director of Planning Officers Society Enterprises.

Mike sits on London Council's Officer Advisory Panel on Planning, is a member of the DCLG Planning Sounding Board, Planning Advisory Service Board, New London Sounding Board and Future of London Steering Group. He also advises the Construction Industry Council on the creation of planning NVQs and apprenticeships. In March 2013 Mike was listed in Planning Magazine as one of the 100 individuals with the greatest influence over planning policy and decision making in the UK.
