The Bournemeouth BC Director of Planning & Transport, Mike Holmes, has become the President of the Planning Officers Society for 2011/12. He was elected at the Society's Annual General meeting held in Bristol on 17th June 2011.

At the AGM Mike stated that for 20/12 "the Society's aims are to continue to work closely with the Coalition Government to help put in place an efficient but strong planning system that is to the benefit of our communities. We will to work closely with other professional bodies and associations; and seek to broaden the appeal of the Society within the public sector, whilst giving support to our Members in their work."
Mike Holmes is Director of Planning & Transport at Bournemouth Borough Council (and is responsible for planning and building control, transport, traffic management, and parking services. He joined Bournemouth as Head of Planning and Development Services in June 2002, from West Berkshire Council (Newbury), where he was Head of Planning and Transport Strategy. Before that he had spent 13 years at Bracknell Forest Borough Council, becoming Borough Planning Officer in 1997. His earlier career was spent at Leicester City, Daventry and Wokingham District Councils.
Mike has a degree in Economics from the University of Hull, a Diploma in Town and Country Planning from Trent Polytechnic, and a management qualification. He is a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and formerly the Planning Officers Society (Senior Vice President). For many years he was one of the organisers of the Planning Summer School, an educational charity that provides an annual event for those involved in planning, including Councillors. He is a Past President of the School.
A Liverpudlian by birth and football persuasion, he is married (to another planner) with two children. Apart from his involvement in professional matters and spending time with his family, he is interested in a number of sports (particularly his children's swimming) and is a keen cyclist.
The Immediate Past President of the Society is Stephen Tapper, Assistant Director in the Place Shaping & Enterprise Department at Enfield LBC. The new Senior Vice-President is Malcolm Sharp, the Director of Environmental and Community Services at Huntingdonshire DC. The new Junior Vice-President is Mike Kiely, Director of Planning & Building Control at Croydon LBC.
