CONSULTATION ON TEMPORARY STRUCTURES FOR EVENTS

Thank you for consulting the Planning Officers Society on the above draft guidance. There appears to be a growing demand for temporary structures and events across the country and, taking into account the potential for many one-off events linked to the Olympics in 2012, this is likely to continue. Therefore the Society acknowledges the need for such a guide and supports the comprehensive draft subject to a few minor comments below.

The majority of temporary events take place without causing any harm. The summary needs to acknowledge this but clarify the need for this guide and where its main focus is. This might be based on the growth in the number of events in recent years and the tendency for them to concentrate in the same squares and greens thus leading to an intensification of usage in some areas. Many venues are chosen for their historical or cultural connections and without careful management, there is the risk of irreparable damage to these sensitive areas.
