Goodness time flies! Already over a month into my year and I have fully realised my limitations of time as a chief planner leading a busy planning department. This is something we all struggle with given the worsening financial pressures in local government. So, to help focus on a continuity of purpose and hopefully our impact, Sarah, Richard and I, as the presidential team, believe that we should work on the theme of ensuring POS is relevant and properly representative of our members and the different parts of the country across the next 3 years. The time has flown by since Steve Ingram took over the role as POS President for 2017/18. I want to thank Steve for his excellent work over the last year and for a great conference which has shown what good planning can achieve. As we now enter into May and summer has, eventually after some delay and deliberations, finally arrived with a flourish this will be my last blog as President as Paul Seddon, who is Nottingham’s Chief Planner, will be succeeding me in the role at next month’s POS AGM.
So perhaps this is the ideal opportunity for me to reflect on the themes that have been prominent during the last year.

Talk about things happening when your back is turned for just a moment. I happen to go on holiday for a couple of weeks at the beginning of March (went to Sri Lanka which is a lovely place with really friendly people but it does also face some challenging development and traffic management issues) and the planning world starts spinning around once again!

In anticipation of the forthcoming passing on of the 'Presidential' baton to Paul Seddon, Nottingham's Chief Planner, in what will now only be a few months' time I was therefore chuffed to be asked to take on the Chairmanship of Planning Officer Society Enterprises (which you may usually see referenced in shorthand as POSe). This vacancy has arisen because Roger Hargreaves the long-standing Chairman has announced his intention to stand down from that role in June. Read more
