Standard method just the starting point for assessing housing need

22 March 2018

Planning magazine reports that the draft planning practice guidance (PPG) issued in the wake of this month's NPPF review has allayed suspicions in some quarters that the government's standard method for calculating councils' objectively assessed housing need would be watered down.

Catriona Riddell, strategic planning specialist for the Planning Officers Society, said that developers shouldn't assume the need figure produced by the standard method will be the ultimate housing requirement. "It's a starting point for assessing your local plan housing numbers. This is absolutely clear from the new NPPF," she said.
