High Court Challenges: a practical guide for young Local Authority planners

Speaker: Freddie Humphreys, Barrister

Judicial review is often seen as a distant, intimidating process reserved for lawyers but understanding how it works is an essential skill for any planner, including in the early years of your career when you are building the foundations of your expertise.  This talk delivered by a practice barrister, who regularly appears in planning litigation demystifies the High Court challenge process from start to finish.  You will learn what triggers a judicial review claim, how pre-action protocols work in practice, what happens during the hearing, and - crucially - how planners' reports and evidence fit into the legal machinery.

Following the 30 minute presentation, there will be a Q&A session with an officer catch up to end.

If anyone has any suggested topics for the officer catch up, then please contact Jade Bagley, Chair, WM Young POS
